Finally some Norwegian models in N scale! There are few of those, but it appears that there will be a change. Fleischmann has launched two NSB-wagons for transporting semi-trailers, including the trailers, respectively from Nor-Cargo and Norwegian Post cargo department, Bring. There are descriptions everywhere that the wagons belonging to the NSB, but they are marked with SJ. I reckon it’s still true, and that they are made based on correct original models. The cars are in different design, but both have reasonably great details. The wagons can be ordered from GLM.

Nevertheless, I must point out a few things. The models are not as good made, as promotion photos to Fleischmann would suggest. The different colors of plastic parts, details of the vehicle and trailer, as well as print on the semi-trailer is not equivalent as notified in advance. Do also note that the part of the trailer carts are molded so the wheels do not go around (except the front pillars which can be detached). But, by all means – they are great models to be in N scale! Just a little paint on a few details so they become super!

Here’s a great model from Trix Minitrix! A maintenance lokomoitv from Deutsche Bahn in N-scale. Beautiful details, almost as if it was in H0 scale. The locomotive comes with a digital decoder installed. There is light functions, and it goes well on the rails despite it only has two axles. Of course I wish it came with a sound decoder, but at present it’s not available. One can bet on it coming in the near future. Looks like the Märklin focuses on Trix Minitrix series. So I cross my fingers!

The model has a fine design, and the ability to pull out and rotate platform on the roof, and bend the railing. There included a ladder to hang on the side of the crane. Pantograph is of course possible to fold out. There included some small parts which are not mounted on the images. It is also available in a yellow version of 1:160. Norway has had such locomotives in use, at NSB train goes under the name Revision wagon LM1 and is used among other things to the electricity audit and diagnosis.

Are you one of those who are struggling to take with you all the 30 bags of model railroad equipment when going on holiday – then the solution is finally here! In Japan, some hotels figured out that they will offer special hotel rooms for their guests who are model railway enthusiasts. Washington Hotel in Akihabara, Tokyo, was the first, and can offer a room with a nearly 6 square meters large model railway. The track is made as an urban Japanese city environment in n-scale and offers space for two train drivers.

The hotel room has a double bed, costing about 280 US$ a day, and you have a view to the Shinkansen (the legendary Japanese speed train). It has pictures of trains on the walls, as well as a good selection of railway-related DVDs. There is, moreover, not only in Tokyo you can find hotel rooms with model railways. Hotel Metropolitan Nagano offers a suite with a 12 square meter large railroad. Here you can find speed trains, natural scenery, and two cities. 1065 US$ you must pay for a night, or 42 $ for an hour.

Sorry for the bad picture quality, but it’s the only photos I manage to find online.

Sometimes you will find goodies you did not know existed, by chance, and sometimes if you are lucky to find those at a great price. I had contacted several shops in Germany and other online stores, and asked if there were rail buses with light and sound, and everyone said there were no such thing on the market yet. But suddenly I found a minitrix set, originally with sound decoder installed, ready to use. And the price was half of the original price, so I just had to have it. It remained in Berlin until disposal.

After almost a year so I got down and got the train set collected, as well as the other items that I had laying on hold. And it was pleasantly surprised of the rail buses from Trix in N-scale. Lovely details, runs well on rails and has many great audio features. Lovely to see it on the small 1:160 rails. A purchase can in no way regret, on the contrary, this model train is recommended! Do note that not all the little extra part is mounted on the pictured train set. I plan to post a video of the locomotive sometime soon!

Every time I visiting Berlin I take visiting all the regular model railway shops. Last time I was in town I was broke as a church rat, but had yet to take a round trip to see if there was anything exciting. One day I ended up visiting Michael Dümchen, near the Zoologischer Garten, where they sell used model trains and other model railroad items. Much exciting to find, but with just over 20 € in my pocket, so it was 6 wagons to 3 € apiece. Not the prettiest, but decent to have as wagons on sidetracks and in the background.

NOT EXACTLY WORLD’S LARGEST MODEL RAILWAY, BUT IT WORKS

I constantly try to get more people to begin with model railways. It’s the perfect hobby for anyone with an interest in technology and gadgets, good concentration and patience, and creativity and imagination. I stand inside with all. But one can not deny that model trains glory days belong to the past – or? An increasingly technical development and attention to details has resulted in a new and growing interest for the railway in miniature. The hope must be that the youth of today are interested in activities outside the PC.

Begining with such a hobby as 30-year-old student at an elite school, made most people more amused than to show interest when told about the model railroad hobby. Especially when you are a faggot, as it not goes into the most gay area of interest (no, I do not mean as opposed to makeup and clothing). For most gay guys are ordinary boys, yet few people are interested in trains and model railroad, and technical toys. Fair enough, some buddies build and collect the Lego © Technic series.

The surprise was still great when I created a Model Railway Group on the site Gaysir (a kind of MySpace / Facebook for gay people), and the group had 100 members within two weeks. Norway is a small country! In other words, as it turned out quickly, I was not alone. And when I was thinking, I have gays friends who both work at the National Rail Administration, as metro and tram driver at # Router (Oslo public transport company), electrician at Mantena (railway workshop), and so on. And when I look at the Instagram of my queer friends, there’s a lot of trains, trams and metros.

In other words, I was struck by my own prejudices, which I had to disprove. Model Railway is a perfect hobby for all boys and men (yes, and women also)! And due to moving this summer I had to suddenly bring some of my model railroad equipment, when I was to hold a photo course for a week at a festival for 200 queer youths. When one of the female participants got ecstatic meeting me and showed her enthusiasm for my website about model railroads, so I had to unpack my model trains!

And suddenly I’m sitting there, on a deserted island in Østfold, with a bunch of buddies playing with model trains. Though not a big installation, it was fun to see the interest. There sat one architect, an upcoming fighter pilot, an upcoming composer, an upcoming psychiatric nurse and a primary school teacher and drove trains on a patio in the sun. Not only does it bring hope that prejudice is about to break down, but also that the hobby has a good future! One only need to spread the good word!

As I even call myself … an architect, photographer, cake monster, and gay model railway enthusiast with a car mania! ;)

Fleischmann has the produced a N-scale version of the classic Swiss Reihe locomotive Re 460 from SBB Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (also known as CFF – Chemins de fer fédéraux Suisses (French) and FFS – Ferrovie federali svizzere (Italian)) that is Switzerland’s national rail company. The electric locomotive has the model name Lok 2000 and was built by ABB Asea Brown Boveri and SLM Schweizerische Lokomotiv-und Maschinenfabrik (which today is part of Stadler Rail Group).

The locomotive was designed by the world famous designer Pininfarina from Torino in Italy, which, incidentally, is best known for its car design. The train is 18.5 meters long and 3 meters wide, has a weight of about 85 tons and has a maximum speed of 200 km / h. It was built in 119 copies, and operates daily the Swiss railway. There are also versions of the locomotive in Norway as NSB EL 18, at Finland’s VR-Yhtymä Oy Sr2, and KCRC TLN / TLS with KCR (Kowloon-Canton Railway) in HongKong.

The model is a true copy of the real SBB CFF FFS Reihe 460 108-4, and is beautifully finished with great details. Model train comes pre-installed with digital audio decoder to engine sound and other sound effects and lights at both ends, and interior lighting. It has great driving qualities on Minitrix rails, and are beautiful to watch in action. The plan is to repainted it to a Norwegian EL18-lok. But it will be when I have been steady on both the paint and decals in 1:160. Until then it is Switzerland that rules!

The model is 11.5 cm from buffer to buffer, and has a height of 28 mm and a width of 19mm. More info at Fleischmann here.

Gottwald telescopic rail crane from Kibri

Kibri / Viessmann has made a great completed model of a telescopic crane for model railway in 1:160. The model has great details, well elaborate, and comes on a railway track in a vitrine. The model has many great features such as movable stabilizers (unfortunately not up and down), vertical movable counterweight, retractable telescopic crane, and the ability to rotate the crane house around the vehicle axis. There is a roll of rope mounted at the rear of the crane, and an instruction manual for this, but think in terms of a different model.

As you can see, the model is elaborate and is similar to the original, although somewhat simplified. Some paint can quickly bring up some details and make it even more realistic. Really great that such models come fully assembled when you do not always wish to build yourself. It takes time and patience, at least at this scale. There have been Gottwald crane wagons on Norwegian rails, but I do not know if this model is . Anyway, I dream of a digital remote controlled and motorized version in n-scale in the future. NB. The wagon comes without couplings.

DETAIL LEVEL ON THE N-SCALE IN COMPARISON WITH A MATCH HEAD

Scale is important in model building. It indicates how big a model is compared to the actual size. This means that if a model car is in the the scale 1:2, it will then be ½ of the authentic vehicle. If the car is 5 meters long in real life, so the model will be 2.5 meters. And so we can continue. When the aspect ratio is 1:10 so the 5 meter long car are to be 50 cm, in other words half a meter. The most common model car scales are 1:43 and 1:18, a car 5 meters will be 11.6 cm and 27.7 cm in model. One parts with the ratio.

In model trains one has the scales: 1:24 (G), 1:32 (1) 1:48 (O), 1:64 (S), 1:76 (OO) 1:87 (HO), 1: 120 (TT), 1:160 (N), 1:220 (Z). Where 1:87 and 1:160 are the most common. These are the scales most manufacturers relate. Some also make products in between the scales to be adaptable to multiple scales, or to save on materials without size looks wrong. But the scale factors is difficult to imagine without having a model at hand. Therefore I wanted to take a picture and show how big (or small) N-scale is.

Here’s a locomotive and a wagon in 1:160 compared with my hand and fingers, as well as a smart card in credit card size and a match (which is the size of a lamp post). Not only can you see how small the ratio we’re talking about, but also how fascinating detailed the models are. One actually get room for 5-6 lines of text on the size of a match head. Therefore, N-scale is becoming more and more popular since the models are becoming more and more elaborate, and with better and better technical solutions.

Finally I started with the construction of the new model railway in n-scale. Initially I was going to make a small diorama to use as surroundings when taking pictures of model cars, but came to the conclusion that one might as well begin at the installation, and take the photos there. I have not been transported my entire move loads to Trondheim yet. Therefore, the selection of kits currently somewhat limited. But I found three various buildings that will be a good start. A storage building with platforms, a workshop, and a commercial building.

Two of the sets I bought before the summer when I visited the Amundsen Hobby in Oslo. He had a wagon full of kits, in the n-scale for 50 kroner apiece. The sets are ok detailed and are quite ok for the price to be, but the colors are a bit unnatural, so some of those needed a little coat of paint. Last set was part of a City Buildings lot which I won at an auction a long time ago. Great buildings for those who want an urban city environment on the model railroad. Link to how the building looked when they were done can be found below.
